Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic, life-shortening and progressive disease. CF affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. People with CF produce thick, sticky mucus that can lead to serious breathing and digestive problems.

• CF is caused by a faulty gene that affects how the body moves salt and water in and out of cells.
• It affects about 1 in 3,500 births in the United States.
• Symptoms include difficulty breathing, frequent lung infections, and trouble absorbing nutrients from food.
• There is currently no cure, but treatments and research are improving life expectancy and quality of life.
CF is inherited when a child receives a faulty gene from both parents. Each parent must be a carrier of the CF gene. Carriers usually do not have CF themselves but can pass the gene to their children.
•If both parents are carriers, each child has:
•25% chance of having CF
•50% chance of being a carrier like their parents
•25% chance of not inheriting the gene at all
Children with CF often require a combination of daily care, medications, and therapies to stay healthy:
•Airway clearance therapies – Techniques like chest physiotherapy to help clear mucus from the lungs
•Inhaled medications – To open airways and reduce infections
•Pancreatic enzyme supplements – Help the body absorb nutrients from food
•High-calorie, high-protein diet – Supports growth and energy needs
•Regular vitamins – Especially fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
•Routine medical care – Frequent check-ups, lung function tests, and monitoring for infections
•Sometimes oxygen therapy or hospitalizations – For severe lung issues or infections
